What are travel points worth? Value by program in 2026

Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards transfer partners yield 1.5–2.0¢/point. Here's what each major points currency is actually worth.

Points value depends entirely on how you redeem. Cash back and statement credits cap out at 1.0¢/point. Travel portal redemptions average 1.0–1.5¢/point. Transfer partner redemptions — airline miles or hotel points — can yield 1.5–2.5¢/point or more on premium cabin awards.

The gap between the best and worst redemption path for 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points: $480 as a statement credit vs $1,140 on a business class award flight at 1.9¢/point. Same points, 2.4× more value.

Valuation estimates above reflect typical achievable value on transfer partner redemptions — not aspirational sweet spots. Actual values vary widely by route, availability, and transfer partner promotions.

FAQ

Which points program is most valuable?

Chase Ultimate Rewards is consistently rated #1 by points valuation analysts, followed by Amex Membership Rewards. Both have broad transfer partner networks covering major domestic and international airlines. Chase edges out Amex for flexibility; Amex wins for premium cabin availability.

What's the best way to redeem credit card points?

Transfer to airline or hotel partners for the highest value. Chase transfers to United, Southwest, Air Canada, Hyatt, and 10+ others. Amex transfers to Delta, Air France/KLM, Singapore Airlines, and Marriott, among others. Hyatt in particular offers exceptional per-point value for hotel stays.

Can points expire?

Most major programs keep points active as long as your account is open and in good standing. Chase Ultimate Rewards points never expire while your account is active. Amex Membership Rewards points expire if your card is canceled — never cancel an Amex card without transferring or redeeming points first.

Are airline miles better than credit card points?

Generally no. Credit card transferable currencies (Chase UR, Amex MR, Capital One Miles, Citi TY) are more flexible because they transfer to multiple airline programs. Airline co-branded miles are locked to one program. Diversified currencies beat locked-in miles for most travelers.
