The Case for Pet Insurance
A single veterinary emergency โ broken leg, swallowed object, sudden illness โ can cost $3,000โ$10,000. For most pet owners, that's not a bill you can absorb without financial stress. Pet insurance shifts that risk to an insurer for a predictable monthly premium.
The question isn't really "should I get pet insurance" โ it's whether the expected value calculation works for your specific pet, breed, age, and local vet costs.
What Pet Insurance Typically Covers
Accident-only plans: The cheapest option. Covers injuries from accidents โ broken bones, cuts, swallowed objects, bite wounds. Does not cover illness.
Accident and illness plans: The most common type. Covers accidents plus illnesses including cancer, infections, digestive issues, and hereditary conditions (check the specific policy for breed-specific exclusions).
Wellness add-ons: Optional riders that cover preventive care โ annual exams, vaccines, flea/tick prevention, dental cleanings. These are often not good value on their own (you're essentially prepaying for known costs), but bundling with an accident/illness policy is sometimes worthwhile.
What Pet Insurance Typically Does NOT Cover
- Pre-existing conditions โ conditions diagnosed before coverage started (or during the waiting period) are typically excluded permanently or for a defined period
- Breed-specific hereditary conditions โ some policies exclude known hereditary conditions for specific breeds (hip dysplasia in large dogs, for example)
- Dental disease (vs. dental accidents) โ routine dental disease is usually excluded unless you have a wellness plan
- Behavioral issues, grooming, boarding
The Waiting Period Problem
Most pet insurance has waiting periods โ typically 2โ14 days for accidents, 14 days for illness, and sometimes 6โ12 months for orthopedic conditions. Conditions that arise during the waiting period may be classified as pre-existing.
The implication: Get pet insurance when your pet is young and healthy, before any conditions develop. Waiting until your pet gets sick is too late โ the illness becomes a pre-existing condition.
How to Compare Plans
Reimbursement model: Most pet insurance reimburses you after you pay the vet (you submit the claim). A handful of companies (Trupanion) pay the vet directly. Confirm how quickly claims are processed.
Annual deductible vs. per-condition deductible: Annual deductibles reset once a year; per-condition deductibles apply separately to each new condition and reset annually. Per-condition deductibles typically favor chronically ill pets; annual deductibles favor healthy pets with occasional one-off issues.
Reimbursement percentage: Typically 70%, 80%, or 90% after the deductible. Higher reimbursement = higher premium.
